The reason is that suspension u-bolts are designed with smoothly rolled threads, while the corresponding hi-nuts have sharply cut threads. As a u-bolt is tightened to the recommended torque level, its threads stretch to fit with the hi-nuts. This stretching, although not always visible, damages the threads. Therefore, once the hi-nuts are removed from the u-bolt, cross-threading occurs, making it impossible for the u-bolt to be properly re-torqued.</p>
